About this piece
Quaternion is a work of about 25 minutes for four cellos, composed in 1996 and dedicated to the cellist Vladimir Tonkha, who premiered it in Moscow on 11 April 1996 with Elena Shulyova, Vladimir Shulyov and Mikhail Shumsky. A BBC Music Magazine review of the first recording reports that two of the cellos are retuned a quarter tone away from the other pair, that harmonics colour much of the piece, and that the players wear thimbles on their fingers in one section.
