About this piece
A four-movement sonata (Allegro moderato; Lament: Adagio; Allegro assai; Con estrema intensità), about 24 minutes long, written in 2002 for David Finckel and Wu Han. It was co-commissioned by Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa and the Music in the Park Series in St. Paul, and Finckel and Wu Han premiered it at Hancher Auditorium on 19 February 2003. In her program note, Auerbach says she began it while reading Hermann Hesse's Demian and treats the piano as an equal partner to the cello. Recordings include Finckel and Wu Han (ArtistLed) and Ani Aznavoorian with the composer (Cedille, Celloquy).
