About this piece
A suite for unaccompanied cello, about 23 minutes long, written in 2015 as a tribute to Pablo Casals. In her note on the publisher page, Auerbach explains that the Catalan song El cant dels ocells (Song of the Birds), closely tied to Casals, forms the heart of the piece, and that the way it unfolds is modelled on Bach's cello suites. Washington Performing Arts commissioned it for its centenary re-creation of Casals's 1915 U.S. tour, and Amit Peled gave the premiere at the Kennedy Center on 8 November 2015. Auerbach made a violin version in 2023.
