About this piece
A cello concerto of about 18 minutes, commissioned by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and dedicated to Ivan Monighetti. Monighetti gave the premiere in Lisbon on 2 June 2002 with the Gulbenkian Orchestra under Muhai Tang. In the composer's note on the publisher's page, Ali-Zadeh calls it "a confessional monologue" for the cello rather than a bravura concerto. The solo part is modelled on the human voice and draws on the mersiye, a mourning lament still sung in southern Azerbaijan, and she says the events of 11 September 2001 strongly shaped the work.
