About this piece
A setting of Carlsen's own sonnet about hearing Strauss's Don Quixote with his father about a year after his mother died. The music quotes Don Quixote and the cello solo from the Andante of Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 2. It was first written for unaccompanied SATB choir, and that version won first prize in the Rocky Mountain Chamber Choir's 2024 Call for Compositions. This version for baritone and cello was made at baritone Philip Lima's suggestion. The cello is an equal partner, with double stops and marked portamento slides.
