About this piece
Eight Takes is a work for unaccompanied cello commissioned by the New York Philharmonic for its 2014 Biennial. It responds to Brenda Shaughnessy's poem "One Love Story, Eight Takes": its eight connected sections take their titles from the poem, and the titles double as expressive directions. Philharmonic cellist Sumire Kudo gave the premiere at the orchestra's CONTACT! concert at SubCulture in New York in June 2014, and Jeffrey Zeigler recorded it for Houses of Zodiac: Poems for Cello (2021). The New York Classical Review noted staccato writing, abrupt tempo changes and percussive tapping on the body of the cello.
