About this piece
Ophelia is a four-minute piece for unaccompanied cello, one of four solos commissioned from Prestini by the Irving M. Klein International String Competition in 2015, each named for a woman from history (the others are Marie-Curie for violin, Heloise for viola and Mata Hari for double bass). The cello solo takes its inspiration from Natasha Trethewey's poem "Bellocq's Ophelia," about a woman photographed in New Orleans in the early 1900s; a falling gesture recurs throughout and is left unresolved at the close. It has been recorded by Caitlin Sullivan on her album A Page From and by Jeffrey Zeigler on Houses of Zodiac (2021).
