About this piece
From the Bones to the Fossils is a ten-minute work for cello, loop pedal and electronics, commissioned by Golden Hornet for cellist Jeffrey Zeigler's Sound of Science project. Prestini developed it in dialogue with climate scientist Andrew Kruczkiewicz, who wrote a paper for her on Caribbean hurricane patterns, and the music traces a storm's currents toward the eye of a hurricane. The cello's vocal-style lines draw on Cuban folk songs in Lucumí, while the electronic track, made with Sxip Shirey, layers field recordings of foghorns, storms and the sea with the composer's voice; the title comes from Kruczkiewicz's closing words.
