About this piece
To Tell a Story is a work for cello and electronics commissioned by cellist Amanda Gookin for her Forward Music Project, a series of solo cello commissions centred on women's experiences, during Gookin's 2018–19 residency at National Sawdust. Prestini wrote it in response to the 2018 Kavanaugh confirmation hearings; the electronic part, made with sound artist Sxip Shirey, is built from samples of Susan Sontag's 1983 interview on storytelling and fiction. Gookin recorded it on Forward Music Project 2.0 (Bright Shiny Things, 2021).
