Soliloquy is a seven-minute lyrical piece that Higdon wrote in 1989 for English horn and strings and later rescored in eight versions, including this one for cello and string orchestra. Her programme note describes it as a wordless, inward 'speech' by the soloist with the strings in support; the original was premiered in 1989 by the Curtis Symphony Orchestra in Philadelphia. The cello version was recorded by Kate Dillingham with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra under Alexei Kornienko in 2002.
