About this piece
Scudding is a work for unaccompanied cello of about six and a half minutes, written in 1980 on a commission from cellist Ruth Dreier, whose recording is on the composer's website. The title refers both to clouds driven fast by the wind and to a ship running before a gale, and the music alternates stormy, fragmented outbursts with a warm, singing middle section. The writing is full of contemporary effects, including left-hand pizzicato against trills, sul ponticello, glissandi, extreme high notes and sudden dynamic contrasts.
