About this piece
A 15-minute score for solo cello and string quintet, written for Shift, Russell Maliphant's 1996 solo dance. Michael Hulls lit the piece so that the dancer moves among his own projected shadows. Shift later became part of PUSH, Maliphant's evening with Sylvie Guillem (2005), which toured opera houses worldwide. A Seen and Heard International review of the 2014 London Coliseum run called the music "a string serenade" with a melancholy atmosphere. Thompson lists it in her catalogue as a concert work available for sale or hire.
