About this piece

A single-movement concerto for cello and string orchestra, commissioned by the Orchestra of the Swan for cellist Matthew Sharp. Sharp had earlier commissioned Wallen's Dervish for cello and piano. The work opens with an unusually long solo cadenza. Much of the solo writing lies very high, and one passage pairs the soloist with the orchestra's leader. In her programme note Wallen calls it "wholly about the notes themselves", in contrast to the more pictorial Dervish. Sharp gave the premiere with the Orchestra of the Swan at the Wiltshire Music Centre in 2008 and recorded it for NMC's 2016 album Photography.
