About this piece
A three-movement concerto (Allegro non troppo; Andante tranquillo; Allegro giocoso) written in 1951 for the Czech cellist Miloš Sádlo, who commissioned it and is its dedicatee. Sádlo premiered it in Warsaw on 21 September 1951 with the Warsaw Philharmonic under Witold Krzemieński. The concerto belongs to Bacewicz's neoclassical period. It follows a Classical plan, with a sonata-form first movement ending in a solo cadenza, a song-like slow movement and a rondo finale in 6/8, but its harmony moves freely outside traditional tonality. A cello and piano reduction was published by PWM in 1953.
