About this piece
A three-movement concerto (fast–slow–fast) from 1963, written for the Spanish cellist Gaspar Cassadó. Cassadó premiered it at the Warsaw Autumn Festival on 29 September 1963 after only two rehearsals, and Bacewicz was unhappy with the performance. It comes from her later, sonoristic period, so its sound world is very different from the neoclassical First Concerto. The orchestra (with bongos, celesta, vibraphone, two harps and piano) works in shifting blocks of colour around a solo line that Bacewicz described as the thread holding the music together. According to the US distributor, the finale uses spiccato, glissandi and harmonics.
