About this piece
A pair of pieces for cello and piano (about 12 minutes in all) commissioned by the Cheng² Duo, the sibling duo of cellist Bryan Cheng and pianist Silvie Cheng, and premiered by them at Carnegie Hall on 21 April 2013; Louie revised the set in 2015. In her programme note, Louie says Pond Mirrors Bright Sky reflects the siblings' support for each other: the two players shape shared phrases, swap repeated-note and chordal material, and mirror each other in fast interlocking lines before a playful close that suggests sunlight on water. Wild Horse Running was inspired by Silvie Cheng's Chinese zodiac sign, the Horse, and uses strummed four-note chords, strikes on the fingerboard, unusual glissandi and exaggerated vibrato. The set is dedicated to the memory of Yuli Turovsky, Bryan Cheng's cello teacher, and the duo recorded it on their album Portrait (Centrediscs, 2023).
