About this piece

A short duo for cello and piano from 2012, published by Schott in 2013 in an edition with fingerings and bowings by cellist Katharina Deserno, who recorded it with pianist Gesa Lücker for Wergo's 2016 album of Heller's chamber music. It opens in a flowing 12/8 with a long-breathed cello melody over rippling piano eighth notes, then broadens into a slower 4/4 section with sustained lines. The publisher pitches it at intermediate players and youth competitions, noting that it stays within the first four positions.

Technical overview

A lyrical line in 12/8 and then 4/4 that stays in the first four positions, with frequent fingered shifts, two- and three-note slurs, chromatic inflections and long crescendos and diminuendos over the piano's flowing accompaniment.
