About this piece

A teaching cycle of 14 short pieces for unaccompanied cello, published by Schott in 2008 and worked out together with two cello teachers. Seven pieces in conventional notation, with titles such as Quietly flowing, Singing (Waltz) and Turbulent, alternate with seven 'Signs': sketches that the student develops through improvisation. The publisher presents it as new music for lessons, concerts and the German youth competition Jugend musiziert.

Technical overview

The notated pieces seen stay mainly in first position with extensions for flat keys, using tied and syncopated rhythms, short slurs, accents and plenty of C-string playing; the 'Signs' ask the cellist to improvise from a written sketch.
