About this piece

The second of Brunke's two Furore volumes of solo-cello music on literary and fairy-tale themes, published in 2014. It contains the four-movement Sonatine in B minor, Op. 1 (1996), dedicated to Martha Jelbke, whose movements trace a fairy-tale arc (Encounter, Evil Spell, Transformation, Redemption), and the five-movement Schattenszenen (Shadow Scenes, 2001): two Elegies framing a Danza, a Choral and a Rhapsodie. The publisher suggests the pieces for readings, private viewings, funerals and church services as well as concerts and competitions, and compares their technical demands to Bach's first three cello suites.

Technical overview

The opening Sonatine alternates pizzicato arpeggios with an arco melody reaching fourth position, and its second movement turns to accented chromatic figures and sustained low double stops.
