About this piece
A single-movement sonata for cello and piano from 1971, played without a break; the American Composers Alliance calls it a "small cello sonata in one movement." After a short pianissimo Adagio, the music moves into an Andante, and it is written in a freely chromatic, non-tonal style. Cellist Einar Holm and pianist Ann Silsbee gave the premiere in 1973 at Barnes Hall, Cornell University. Bell's son, cellist Stephen Drake, recorded it with pianist Max Lifchitz for North/South Recordings in 2005.
