About this piece
A three-movement work for cello and orchestra (2014-15), about 21 minutes long, commissioned by the Vancouver Island Symphony with support from the Canada Council for the Arts. Chang's program note calls it a meditation on isolation. It follows the Romantic concerto in casting the soloist as protagonist, but the orchestra is kept at a distance, so the cello seems to reach for something it never quite grasps. "Spheres" begins with the cello alone and grows more turbulent; "In the slow time of stars" sets a quiet, inward melody against soft, high orchestral chords; "Within darkness" moves from skittish low fragments to an explosive climax. Ariel Barnes recorded it with the Vancouver Island Symphony under Pierre Simard on the album A Quinary.
