About this piece
A flexible suite of 27 short movements for unaccompanied cello ('Reflections'), first titled Reflections of an Eccentric English Artist (2015, revised 2020). Hildegard of Bingen's chant Ave generosa runs through rustic dances and character pieces based on the paintings and notebooks of the English artist Ben Hartley, and boxed passages invite the cellist to improvise briefly. Players choose, reorder and repeat movements as they like. Difficulty ranges from deliberately easy pieces (e.g. Reflections 2, 6 and 20) to two virtuosic Fantasias (Reflections 12 and 27), and the score prints a suggested 12-minute sequence for intermediate players, so a teacher and students can perform it together. Heather Tuach made the first recording (Divine Art, 2016) and gave the premiere at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham, on 20 May 2017.
