About this piece

Bravo! Cello (Boosey & Hawkes, 2004) is a book of 28 short pieces for cello and piano by the educator Carol Barratt, part of her Bravo! series for young instrumentalists. Sixteen are Barratt originals with playful titles such as "Never Leave the Cello in the Sun!" and "Fanfare for 'One Finger'"; the rest are arrangements of folk songs and short pieces by Czerny, Schubert, Kabalevsky and Rameau. The opening pieces use only open strings and the first finger, and the retailer listing notes that the edition was set for Trinity's Grade 1 syllabus in 2007.

Technical overview

The opening pieces keep the left hand to open strings and first finger on the G, D and A strings, in steady quarter- and eighth-note rhythms with dynamic contrasts, accents and a pizzicato final note; later pieces in the book (not seen) progress toward Grade 1 standard.
