About this piece
A three-movement sonata printed around 1815 in Berlin and Leipzig and dedicated to the celebrated cello virtuoso and court-orchestra cellist Max Bohrer. A sonata-form Allegro, in which the piano introduces the main theme and the cello takes the lyrical second theme, is followed by a singing Adagio ma non troppo with a dramatic contrasting episode. It ends with an Andante set of variations on 'Là ci darem la mano' from Mozart's Don Giovanni, with a coda in which the cello shares the cadenza. It was printed when Liebmann was about twenty, and the two instruments are treated as equal partners rather than cello-with-accompaniment.
