About this piece
Three short pieces for cello and piano (Adagio consolante, Allegretto grazioso, Religioso), published by Simrock in Berlin in 1902 as 'Drei Stücke für Violoncell mit Begleitung des Claviers'. The Adagio consolante is a broad, consoling song that builds through a more animated middle section to a fortissimo climax before settling back. The Allegretto grazioso is a gentle melody in 3/4 over flowing piano arpeggios and ends with soft pizzicato chords. The first two pieces are free to download from the Badische Landesbibliothek (which holds Faisst's estate) and IMSLP, and Hildegard reprints them in an anthology edited by Susan Pickett.
Technical overview
The cellist reads bass, tenor and treble clef and shifts into the upper positions, reaching D5 at the end of No. 1. The pieces need sustained legato lines, dotted and 32nd-note ornamental figures, and a dynamic range from pp to ff under frequent tempo changes; No. 2 ends with pizzicato chords.
