About this piece

A short lyrical Romanze for cello and piano, in B-flat major and 3/4 time. An Andante song frames a contrasting 'Poco allegretto, molto espressivo' middle section in D major, before Tempo I returns, with a long trilled note near the end and a quiet close. It survives as an autograph score and cello part in Schweikert's estate at the Badische Landesbibliothek, which has digitised it. The library dates it only to the late nineteenth century, which would make it an early work (Schweikert was born in 1887 and began composing at about ten). A modern edition for cello (or violin/viola) and piano, edited by the Karlsruhe pianist Jeannette La-Deur, is listed by retailers.

Technical overview

The cellist plays a singing line in bass clef with shifts up to around F4, and the middle section moves into treble clef in fourth-position range with a natural-harmonic A. It needs dotted and triplet figures, a trill, tempo changes between sections, and dynamics from pp to ff.
