About this piece
A four-movement suite of about 16 minutes for solo cello with seven winds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone) and percussion, adapted from Chen Yi's 1998 cello quintet Sound of the Five for her UMKC colleagues Carter Enyeart and Sarah McKoin and first performed at UMKC on 26 April 2005. Each movement recreates the sound of Chinese traditional music on Western instruments: a lusheng (bamboo mouth-organ) ensemble with the cello as lead player, the distant ring of ancient bronze set bells in harmonics, a lyrical romance for the hsiao flute and ch'in zither, and a flower-drum dance finale in which the winds spar with the soloist. Recorded by Enyeart with the Texas Tech University Symphonic Wind Ensemble (Naxos, 2015) and by David Russell with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP/sound, 2018).
