About this piece
A cello concerto of about 17 minutes dedicated to three tragic figures in the arts - Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Allan Poe and Robert Schumann - with orchestral interludes that introduce each of them and a solo part that the composer treats as the artists' inner voices, shifting between longing, playfulness and obsession. It was written for cellist Wendy Law and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta on a commission from the Hong Kong Composers' Guild with Canada Council support, and was premiered by them under Tsang Yeh in Hong Kong on 23 November 2000.
