About this piece
A 13-minute work for solo cello and guitar quartet, commissioned by cellist Rachel Mercer and the Canadian Guitar Quartet, who premiered it on 3 August 2014 at the Ottawa Chamberfest in Beechwood, the National Cemetery of Canada. Its four connected sections (Prologue, Ballo, Epilogue, Masque) tell an imagined story of a love encounter at a masked ball, and the music draws on the warmth of Latin dance and on flamenco, with the guitars' strummed chords and rhythmic patterns underpinning the solo cello.
