About this piece
A four-movement work of about 15 minutes for solo cello and string orchestra with an optional flamenco dancer; the title is Spanish for 'masquerade', and the composer cites her fascination with flamenco's rhythm and spontaneous energy. Commissioned by the Allegra Chamber Orchestra, it was premiered in Vancouver on 25 June 2021 by Rachel Mercer with dancer Cyrena Luchkow-Huang, conducted by Janna Sailor. It uses the same four-movement plan (Prologue, Ballo, Epilogue, Masque) as the composer's Baile de Máscaras for cello and guitar quartet (2014), with the strings strumming pizzicato chords and adding percussive effects beneath the soloist.
