About this piece
A short, song-like piece for viola or cello with piano (Lagrima is Spanish for 'tear'), written during Eckhardt-Gramatté's years in Barcelona in the late 1920s; the manuscript of this version is dated 16 September 1928 and marked as a second arrangement. Over a gently rocking chordal accompaniment, a plain, sighing melody builds to a short, fiercely chromatic climax in chords and double stops before returning to a quiet close. A 1978 recording by cellist Cornelius Herrmann and pianist Miriam Mahood is available online.
