About this piece
A three-movement, 16-minute duo for cello and piano, commissioned for the University of Saskatchewan festival in Saskatoon during the 1959 Saskatchewan Jubilee and premiered there by cellist Peggie Sampson and pianist Lorne Watson, two Manitoba musicians who championed the composer. The writing is rhythmically restless, with bar-to-bar changes between metres such as 5/16, 6/16 and 9/16, and the piano part is as demanding as the cello's. Sampson later recorded it with pianist Diedre Irons for the Anthology of Canadian Music.
