About this piece
Iasg (Gaelic for 'fish', pronounced roughly 'eesk') is a single-movement work of about ten to eleven minutes for cello and piano, written in 1993 for cellist Robert Irvine and pianist Graeme McNaught and commissioned by the composer Bill Connor. It follows the life of a salmon: hatching in a mountain stream, a long, calm central section of feeding in the open sea, and the final exhausting leaps upstream to spawn and die where it was born. Irvine and McNaught gave the premiere at the Stevenson Hall, Glasgow, and Irvine later recorded it with Beamish at the piano on the BIS album 'Bridging the Day' (2001).
