About this piece
An unaccompanied cello piece of about eight minutes in four linked sections (Lento, Andante, Allegro, Adagio), written in 1994 for Robert Irvine and commissioned by the Galashiels Arts Association. It is a set of variations on the Borders song 'Braw, Braw Lads of Gala Water', with part of the tune itself heard only at the end. In her CD booklet note the composer explains that the piece expressed her and Irvine's grief at losing a baby through miscarriage that year. Irvine gave the premiere in the Volunteers Hall, Galashiels, in 1995.
