About this piece
A short unaccompanied encore piece (about three and a half to four minutes) built as variations on the Irish reel 'The Wise Maid', commissioned by Gerry Mattock and first played by Robert Irvine at Strathgarry House, Perthshire, on 20 May 2000. In her booklet note the composer says the variations stretch cello technique 'to an almost absurd extent', and the score's tongue-in-cheek directions include con pena, which she glosses as 'only just'. She later expanded it into The Wiser Maid for string sextet (2002), and versions for solo viola and solo violin are also published.
