About this piece
A work for cello and piano of about 12 minutes in five linked sections (Day Break, Morning Shimmer, Midday: The Heron, Afternoon: The Brook, Sundown), commissioned by Dr Gerry Mattock for his 70th birthday and first performed by Steven Isserlis and Ian Brown at Painswick House, Gloucestershire, on 16 August 1998. It traces sunlight moving across the valley around Brook Cottage, the home Mattock shared with Beryl Calver-Jones, centring on a turf-covered footbridge he designed with a sundial set in its parapet; the resident heron gets its own rhythmic portrait. It began a long series of commissions from the couple and gave its title to Robert Irvine and the composer's 2001 BIS album.
