About this piece
A four-movement sonata of about 20 minutes, commissioned in 1999 by Beryl Calver-Jones and Gerry Mattock and premiered by Robert Irvine with the composer at the piano on 20 May 2000 at Strathgarry House, Killiecrankie, Perthshire. The patrons asked for musical portraits of four friends, so each movement is dedicated to one of them: a jazz-inflected Prelude, a restless Scherzo (following without a break) whose middle section nods to Thelonious Monk, a calm Ballad with birdsong, and closing Variations on a theme first stated in unison by both instruments. Irvine and Beamish recorded it on BIS's 'Bridging the Day' (2001).
