About this piece
An unaccompanied cello work of about six minutes in eight short sections (Seed, Spinning Seed, Roots, shoots, Leaves, Flowers, Tree, Autumn, Cello) that follows a maple tree from its propeller-like seed to maturity, ending with an open-string section that explores the resonance of the instrument, whose back is traditionally made of maple. It was co-commissioned by the Brighton Festival, Ars et Terra Festival (with SACEM) and Ditchling Arts and Crafts Museum, to be played between readings from artist John Newling's collection of letters 'Dear Nature', but it can also be performed as a single movement. The whole piece grows from an opening five-note 'seed', and the composer asks for an improvisatory style of playing.
