About this piece
A jazz-inflected suite for cello and piano in three movements named for parts of New York: Uptown, Midtown and Downtown. It was composed in 1995, lasts about ten minutes and is dedicated to Robert Campbell. Uptown opens with the cello playing pizzicato, Midtown is a slow, loose ballad marked "Dark and Soulful", and Downtown is in swing time, with chord symbols and optional improvised lines that have written-out alternatives. In her programme note Frank says the piece "demands a high level of agility" from both players, partly because its swing rhythms are not notated exactly.
