About this piece

An 18-minute, seven-movement portrait in music of José María Arguedas's novel Los ríos profundos, in which the boy Ernesto travels through a divided Andean Peru. The movements, many played without a break, mix Western and Quechua elements, from an opening cello soliloquy built on Ernesto's motif to a huayno, a harawi and a closing "La Vuelta". Rebecca Gilmore (cello) gave the premiere with Frank at the piano on 21 November 1999 in Durham, North Carolina, on a Mallarmé Chamber Players concert. The cello part includes extended techniques such as sul ponticello tremolo and bowing on or across the bridge.
