About this piece
A single-movement piece for solo cello, first written in 2005 as the score for Heather McCalden's short film "Figures of Speech" and extended in 2015 to about ten minutes for a second McCalden film. The title comes from McCalden's reading of a Jacques Derrida essay on the word "perhaps", which she connects with uncertainty and hope. Matthew Zalkind premiered the original version on 15 April 2005, and Colin Stokes gave the first performance of the extended version with Le Train Bleu at National Sawdust on 20 April 2015. The composer notes that the cello part stands on its own and is usually performed without the film.
