About this piece
The composer's cello-and-piano transcription of her 2013 work for violin and piano, commissioned by MuSE (Multicultural Sonic Evolution) in New York; it lasts about eleven minutes. It is a fantasia on two Indian folk melodies from her own family: a song from a recording made by her maternal grandfather, and a lullaby her paternal grandmother sang to her as a baby. Esmail describes it as the first time she brought her family's songs into her concert music. Much of the score has no barlines, and in bracketed passages the cello and piano are deliberately out of alignment, so players usually perform from the full score.
