About this piece

A 25-minute work for solo cello and chamber ensemble in six movements, some played without a break (Prelude, Moto perpetuo, Minuet and Trio, Sarabande, Gavotte, Canto), modelled on the dance-suite form of the cello suites of Bach and Britten. Commissioned by cellist David Cohen, a fellow Menuhin School alumnus, it was premiered by Cohen and the Rambert Orchestra under Paul Hoskins at St Leonard's, Shoreditch, during the 2013 Spitalfields Festival. In her note the composer links it to her own history as a cellist and to the pressures of modern classical careers; Cohen recorded it on Stolen Rhythm (Champs Hill, 2017).
