About this piece
An eight-minute meditation for cello and piano written for cellist Gemma Rosefield, who premiered it with pianist Nicola Eimer at the Purcell Room, London, on 7 January 2008 in the Park Lane Group Young Artists series. McDowall drew on John Berendt's book The City of Falling Angels, about Venice: long, spun-out melodies are set against broken, falling phrases over a gently rocking rhythm that evokes the lagoon. The title comes from a sign warning of falling angels that stood outside the church of Santa Maria della Salute in the 1970s, before its marble statues were restored.
