About this piece
A three-minute piece for unaccompanied cello, commissioned by and dedicated to cellist Yehuda Hanani for a concert celebrating the suffragettes in the Berkshires on 17 June 2017. The title letters are the initials of composer and suffragette Dame Ethel Smyth. As Musgrave's note explains, they also begin the tempo words of the three short sections (Desolate, Energized, Stormy) and name the notes on which those sections end: D, E natural and E-flat ('Es' in German).
