A seven-minute elegy for cello and piano, Zwilich's 2000 adaptation of her 1999 piano piece written in memory of Judith Arron, the late executive and artistic director of Carnegie Hall, where Zwilich held the first Composer's Chair. It is marked Liberamente (crotchet = 60). The publisher's note for the later double-bass version says its challenges are 'musical rather than technical': sustaining one line from start to finish, using rubato, shaping phrases and varying colour. Versions also exist for double bass and for saxophone.
