About this piece
A 20-minute work for solo cello and seven players (alto flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola and double bass), commissioned by the Camden Festival and premiered in March 1979 by Christopher van Kampen with the Nash Ensemble. The title is a Hindu word for a benevolent nature spirit. In the composer's description the ensemble is a landscape through which the cello flows like a stream becoming a river and then the sea: the solo line descends gradually from the top of the instrument's range to the bottom, while two recurring ensemble refrains, one of soft stepping chords and one fast and brilliant, mark its progress.
