About this piece
A six-minute piece for cello and piano, written in September 1988 for the Muhlfeld Trio with funds from Greater London Arts. It is the second of a pair of night pieces: its companion, Lullaby for clarinet and piano, pictures a mother telling her child bedtime stories, and the Nocturne moves deeper into the night as a single unbroken song, sung by the mother for her own sake as much as the child's. It was recorded by Julia Vohralik (cello) and Jonathan Higgins (piano) on the Clarinet Classics album New English Clarinet Music.
