About this piece
A three-movement concerto that Raum wrote in 1993 for the bassist David Ruby. The Saskatoon Symphony commissioned it for its Bach and Friends series, with support from the Saskatchewan Arts Board, and gave the premiere that season. In her note in the score, Raum says the concerto is deliberately Romantic in style to suit Ruby's taste. A heroic first movement leads to a dreamlike slow movement, and the finale's cadenza draws on material from all three movements. The same note says the concerto can also be played on cello and that the score includes a separate solo cello part. The orchestra is small: one each of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn, plus strings.
