About this piece
A three-movement sonata (Cycles, Nightfall, Spring Ahead), first written in 2002 for the bassoonist Carolyn Beck and later transcribed by the composer for cello and piano. The title refers to the daily rhythms of living things. In the first movement the two instruments chase each other through a triplet motif and a jazzier section. The slow middle movement, Nightfall, is a brooding piece that Albert links to the mood after September 11. The finale is named for the spring change to daylight saving time and is light-hearted.
